Every canvas has two sides. Only one is ever exhibited.
What one mind holds, another cannot reach.
The Language
Three elements hold across this series.
White. Not empty space. The full field of possibility, every colour present at once, before one is chosen. Dense, textured, open.
Gold. The perceptual act. Not what is there, but what a mind builds from what is there. It works the way gold worked in Byzantine icons: not physical light, but uncreated light — the light that precedes the visible world and gives us the sense of existing. Warm, imprecise at the edges, unstable as the light moves across it. Like perception.
Shadow. What has been perceived, once it has landed. The concrete trace it leaves in lived reality. The black is warm, drawn from the same palette as the gold.
Two sides
The front of the canvas is the perceptual act made visible. The back holds a drawing sewn into the fabric: the subject in its interior form — associative, imagined, private. Not an illustration of the front. A different manifestation of the same reality.
The front does not explain the back. The back does not explain the front.
In a room, you know something exists behind the canvas. You cannot see it. That impossibility is part of the work: it is the tension you feel before any other mind, knowing it holds what will never fully reach you.
Each work is titled after the sewn drawing, after the side that stays hidden.
